This is one of those weird albums that I've listened to quite a bit, knowing that I don't really, REALLY dig it, and yet I keep coming back to it. I feel like there are a number of bands who do this style better, but it's still a solid album. Pretty talented guitarists though, although they could stand to be a bit more creative imo.
No posts today, went and saw the Pixies play. It was (obviously) amazing! Played all of Doolittle, B sides from Doolittle, plus many other songs. The ones I remember off the top of my head were U-Mass, Nimrod's Son, Where Is My Mind, and Gigantic. Definitely the best show I've been to since The Mountain Goats.
For the past week or two I've been listening to a ton of death metal, mostly of the old school variety. So here's some bands you might have heard of, or maybe not. They all kick ass.
Monstrosity
I have LegendofRock3021 from HoR to thank for showing me this band, they rip. I guess the vocalist is Corpsegrinder from Cannibal Corpse? He sounds a hell of a lot better in this band than in CC though, imo. And the musicians he plays with are nuts, great riffs EVERYWHERE.
Bolt Thrower
I think these guys are a bit more popular in the death metal world. I really dig the stoner-y riffs, it makes it like a more metal sludge band. If that makes sense! Anyways they're fucking sweet.
Pestilence
Fucking classic death metal band. Martin van Drunen's vocals are otherworldly, they just add an eeriness to the whole package. Top that off with, you guessed it, RIFFS. They'll go from killer thrashy riffs to super complex prog metal passages, then into solos that are at times reminiscent of Slayer. Can you ask for more?
I'll leave it at that for now, but I can't see this death metal kick stopping anytime soon so you might see more in the near future.
I'm back. Hopefully consistently again! I think I'm going to change the format a bit though, since my writing leaves quite a bit to be desired (or so I'm told :P). Here's the newish Foo Fighters video, "White Limo", it's great.
